Robert Aidala, G Company 179th Infantry Regiment | |
Robert Aidala was born in NYC and had his basic training in NY or NJ. He was in the 45th Division, 179th Infantry Regiment, Company G. He started out in South Africa and was brought to the shores of Anzio to fight. Shortly after that he was captured by the Germans and spent 18 months as a POW. He was actually set free on his birthday (May 2nd ) when the war was over. He spoke of traveling through Rome Italy and climbing up mountains around Thanksgiving time. He also was awarded a purple heart. He was full of great stories and also kept a journal. He was a very proud Thunderbird and just died a couple of years ago from leukemia. Bob's family are all very proud of him and shared his pictures and information in his memory. |
