DescriptionDistrict of Columbia resident Helen Simpson saying goodbye to her husband William L. Simpson at Union Station in Washington, D.C. on September 10, 1942. He is bound for U.S. Army training at Pine Camp, New York and from there to Europe with the 45th Division via the southern Atlantic crossing.
She forgot to bring a radio (visible in her hand) she bought for him and rushed home to get it. She got back to Union Station just before the train departed in time to give him the going-away gift. The moment was captured in this well-composed photograph.
