Award of Silver Star:
Joseph D. Barry 0404617 AUS, Chaplain (Captain), Hq 1stBn, 157th IR, for gallantry in action on 29-30 July 1943 near San Stefano, Sicily. During an attack to capture a dominant hill mass, the 1st Bn launched an attack up a steep and rocky mtn. slope. When one of the assault companies was subjected to heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire inflicting heavy casualties, Chaplain Barry immediately proceeded to the area. Disregarding the intense artillery fire, he gave first aid and comfort to the wounded and administered last rites to the dying. He worked tirelessly directing the evacuation of wounded and refused to leave the area until all casualties were removed. Later he led searching parties into mine-sewn areas for the purpose of recovering bodies of men who had died on the battlefield. His cool efficiency under fire and cheerful acceptance of danger and hardship was an inspiration to all who served with him and aroused the troops to greater efforts on the field of battle. His conduct reflects high credit on the Chaplain’s Corps of the United States Army.
Leroy T. Amos, saw combat as an infantry soldier in the 157th Infantry Regiment in France and Germany. His battalion liberated the 32,000 emaciated prisoners at the Dachau concentration camp. On the day the camp was liberated, Leroy was temporarily assigned as the radio-telephone operator to LTC Felix Sparks, the battalion commander.

Interesting, Scalabrino's Father was from Italy, mother's family from france. When the war broke out, Scalabrino lived in Italy. When Mussolini took power his family sent him to France to avoid the draft. Then when Germany invaded France his family got him out and sent him to America (we think NY). Eventually he was drafted in the US Army with the 45th (157th). He died during the war. The others in the photo survived and made it home.

This picture was sent to dad (Wayne L. Watts) a few years before he passed away. By the time I saw it, he couldn't remember who had sent it or where he was when the picture was taken. He was guessing "somewhere between North Africa and Anzio". Not much help, there. Beach in the background. He was with the 157th, Company L.
