Description This photo originally appeared in the Bayonne, NJ Times on March 8, 1944 with the following caption. "The Allied Fifth Army crew is happy over two things. They have been relieved after five days of fighting in the Carocetta area and they are credited with knocking out an enemy tank -their company is credited with a bag of four. Left to right are Cpl William Angeli of Bayonne, Pvt Chester Timblin, Luthersberg, PA, and Pvt Thomas Mc Shea of Chicago, Ill. " They were part of company A, 191st Tank Battalion.

"Burned hulk of an American tank knocked-out by German 88mm gun located about 100 yards down the yard."
This Sherman was commanded by Sgt. Theodore Valard, B Company, 191st Tank Battalion. His tank was hit by the 88 on 19 August near Rians. Valard was killed and his body was not recovered or identified. Strangely, he is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Brittany American Cemetery, not at Rhone.

Loop, Binghamton, New York, age 48, who is leaving Italy for a tour of duty in the United States. Father and son are in the same outfit, a Tank Battalion that figured prominently in knocking out several German Tanks in a recent attack on the 45th Division, February 11, 1944. Father and son enlisted together, took Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, together, and came overseas together. Dad served in the First World War with the Infantry.
